Build Stronger Teams and Prepare for Workforce Transitions

A key employee leaves unexpectedly. A manager takes an extended leave. A new project changes how work gets done. A growing business needs to redistribute responsibilities across a team. These situations can create significant disruption when roles, processes, and backup plans are unclear.

Businesses can minimize disruption by intentionally structuring work and preparing employees for new responsibilities.

The Steuben County Economic Development Corporation (SCEDC) will address these challenges in its Structuring Work Within a Team & Replacement Strategies training session on October 7. This workshop will provide business leaders with practical tools to organize work, manage staffing changes, and prepare for employee transitions.

Structure Work Around Business Priorities

Effective team structure begins with clearly defined roles and responsibilities. When workflows align with business priorities, employees make decisions confidently, and managers can address gaps proactively.

This training will help participants assess team operations and identify ways to improve work assignment and coordination. These concepts apply to all business sectors in Steuben County, including manufacturing, healthcare, retail, professional services, and hospitality.

Participants will have the opportunity to learn how to:

  • Align roles and responsibilities with changing business priorities.
  • Build workflows that support accountability and efficiency.
  • Redistribute work when staffing levels change.
  • Prepare teams to take on new projects and responsibilities.
  • Identify potential successors and backup leaders.
  • Document responsibilities and processes for future transitions.
  • Maintain continuity during promotions, leaves of absence, or other organizational changes.

These strategies benefit businesses of all sizes. Small companies may prepare one employee for multiple key roles, while larger organizations may require formal succession and workforce planning. The goal remains to ensure continuity when circumstances change.

Prepare for Workforce Transitions

Replacement planning is essential for business continuity and workforce development. By preparing for employee departures, promotions, or leaves, organizations have more options during transitions.

The training will help leaders identify key role requirements, evaluate potential successors, and develop plans for transferring responsibilities. Participants can apply these strategies to current workforce challenges in their organizations.

This session also supports the Steuben County Economic Development Corporation’s broader goal of helping local businesses retain and develop their workforce. Business retention relies on maintaining productivity, developing employees, and adapting to workforce changes. SCEDC provides business leaders with practical management and workforce tools to support these efforts.

The Structuring Work Within a Team & Replacement Strategies session will be held on October 7, 2026, at SCEDC's Angola office. Participants may choose between a morning session from 8 a.m. to noon ET or an afternoon session from 1 to 5 p.m. ET. Registration closes September 30. The fee is $125 per attendee.
