For manufacturers in Steuben County, finding and keeping skilled employees is always important. As technology changes, customer needs shift, and experienced workers take on new roles or retire, businesses need to keep building their teams’ skills to stay competitive.

The Leadership Skills for Success helps Steuben County manufacturers invest in their employees and lower training costs. Offered by the Steuben County Economic Development Corporation (SCEDC), in partnership with the Purdue Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP) and with support from the Don Wood Foundation, the program provides focused training that delivers real results.

Build Skills to Help Your Business Grow

This program helps manufacturers train employees, prepare future leaders, and boost performance. With a shared-cost approach, employers receive professional training and financial assistance to cover part of the costs.

Here’s how it works:

  • Employers apply for funding support.
  • SCEDC reviews applications to assess how they align with the program’s goals and potential impact.
  • Purdue MEP delivers the training.
  • SCEDC pays part of the training cost directly to the provider.
  • Employers cover the remaining balance.

The program tracks results and checks in after six months to see how the training has helped your business.

Get Training That Solves Real Workforce Challenges

Every manufacturer has unique challenges, but many workforce needs are similar. This program supports training in areas that can boost productivity, help keep employees, and improve how your business runs.

Eligible training includes:

  • Leadership and supervisory development
  • Lean and process improvement
  • Technical skill development

Purdue MEP provides the training. For over 20 years, they have helped Indiana manufacturers improve operations, build stronger teams, and stay competitive. Purdue MEP has worked with thousands of companies and helped create billions in economic impact through better productivity, cost savings, and workforce training.

For Steuben County manufacturers, this means access to experienced trainers who understand the challenges facing today's industrial workforce.

Put Training to Work for Your Business

Workforce development is most valuable when training supports your business goals. This program can help manufacturers tackle a range of operational and workforce challenges.

Investing in training brings benefits across your business. Employees learn new skills, performance improves, and companies build better career paths that help keep and grow talent.

Here are some potential examples:

A growing manufacturer prepares new supervisors.
A company promotes top production employees to leadership roles. Leadership and supervisory training help them build the communication, coaching, and team management skills they need for their new jobs.

A production facility improves efficiency.
A manufacturer faces bottlenecks that slow down production. Lean and process improvement training helps employees spot waste, improve workflows, and boost productivity.

A company adopts new equipment or technology.
When new machines are added, employees need new technical skills to get the most out of them and avoid downtime. Technical training gives workers the knowledge to use equipment safely and effectively.
